The Prologue
Our Story
“Just Do It!”
Nick and Sam first met at RCM Technologies in Westerly, Rhode Island at an office Christmas Party in 2015. Sam was disappointed that no one understood her ugly holiday sweater… who HASN’T seen the Shia LaBeouf “Don’t Let Your Dreams Be Dreams!” video!? After being questioned so many times on her sweater choice, Sam had given up hope that anyone would share her same taste in humor. However, while in passing, Nick looked Sam’s way and laughed.
“Nice sweater!”
“Finally! Thank you!”
They continued to walk past each other and that was it. They’re first meeting was over and they wouldn’t meet again for nearly three years. August of 2018, Sam and Nick were both out in downtown Westerly, barhopping with friends. Nick almost didn’t go out that night, but he was glad he did! Nick spotted Sam sitting at the bar at C C O'Brien's Sports Cafe and noticed that the two had mutual friends. While a friend of his was talking it up with a friend of Sam’s, Nick approached her. Sam stopped him before he could even finish his sentence…
“Hey, Don’t I know you from - “
“I’m not sleeping with you.”
In Sam’s defense, it was last call, the bar was closing within the hour and she did not recognize Nick from their brief encounter a few years back. If she had recognized him, this would have gone very differently. Not the most romantic of beginnings, but one Nick and Sam still laugh about now. After the initial shock wore off, Nick continued his sentence that had been aggressively cut off.
“Don’t I know you from work?”
Sam’s face lit on fire in utter shame as she realized what she had just said to a coworker. After apologizing profusely, the two quickly got over the awkwardness and talked till closing. They continued to meet up in downtown Westerly almost every weekend after that. Brazen Hen, Amigos, Perks & Corks, Koi, and what was once Malted Barley were and still are their go to spots. Eventually they went on their first date that November at Dog Watch Cafe in Stonington CT. And that is how the love story between the video gamer and the book turned comic reader began. The connection that Sam was in fact the “Shia LaBeouf sweater girl” wouldn’t even be made until much later down the road.
Moral of the story. Shoot your shot. Wear the weird sweater. Remember the wise words of actor Shia LaBeouf. “Just DO IT! Don’t let your dreams be dreams!”
